We knew when planning our trip we wanted to take a day trip to Sausalito. Located just across the bay you can easily access it by ferry or car. Knowing the kids would love the ferry experience so we opted for boat transportation! It is a beautiful modernized building on the inside with several stalls of shops ranging from your morning coffee to farmers market produce. We even popped into the bookstore, Book Passage, to grab a San Francisco book before we hopped on our ferry to Sausalito. The tickets for the ferry ride are available outside and to the right near the ferry boarding terminal at a machine.
The quick 30 min ferry ride was nothing but pure entertainment for my 4 year old son. Seeing the San Francisco skyline from a far, Alcatraz “where the bad people used to be” and the golden bridge were magical!
Before you know it you are pulling into the quaint city of Sausalito. It’s worlds away from the bustle and hustle of San Francisco. Right by the docking area there are several shops and restaurants. Our first stop was Games People Play. This adorable toy store had a fantastic selection of unique toys and games for kids and adults.
We were supposed to be heading to the Bay Area Discovery Museum however I failed to check the opening days and times…. it was closed! Good thing we hadn’t mentioned it to our son but boy was that a bummer. Be sure to check museum hours before your visit!
We found a cute little cafe with a water view for lunch. Be prepared for expensive prices in Sausalito. My sons grilled cheese was $14 but you know what? He ate every last bite so I can’t complain!
Prior to the trip I took note of a good playground in the area – Robin Sweeney Park. After our delicious lunch we walked the half mile for my son to enjoy hours worth of playing in the sand and just being a kid!
TIP: THERE’S A LIBRARY LOCATED DIRECTLY BEHIND THE PARK, UP THE HILL, PERFECT FOR A RESTROOM BREAK!
We couldn’t leave Sausalito without having ice cream from Lapperts. It was some of the best I have ever had and I LOVE ice cream. All in all it was a fantastic day in Sausalito and we remembered how important it is to be flexible while traveling!
